We’re good at busting varicose vein myths at Richard Evans Vascular – here’s another one – varicose veins only affect older people…

It’s true there’s an increased risk with age but younger people, too, can get varicose veins, because varicose veins are mostly hereditary.

Some other things don’t help though: if you’re on your feet all day, eg, working in a cafe or retail or otherwise standing a lot on hard floors during your working day, being overweight is another risk factor. These can all put  pressure on your veins and cause your legs to be puffy or tired at the end of the day.

If you have a vein that’s niggling you, it’s best to get it looked at sooner rather than later. Varicose veins are like most things, it’s better to treat them when they first appear or start troubling you.

In the meantime wearing compression socks should help with tired or aching legs.
